European aircraft manufacturer Airbus is nearing the completion of a deal with LOT Polish Airlines for the acquisition of A220 passenger jets, as reported by industry insiders to Reuters. The discussions have been taking place in the face of robust competition from Brazil’s Embraer, which has also submitted a bid to the Polish airline.

Unless an unforeseen event arises at the last moment, an agreement for approximately 40 Airbus regional jets could be finalized as soon as the Paris Airshow opens on Monday, according to sources who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

– We do not comment on speculation, an Airbus representative stated. LOT and Embraer also refrained from making comments.

The official announcement is set for Monday

The Paris Air Show commences on Monday at Le Bourget Airport. This event ranks among the largest in the aviation sector globally, attracting participants from not only the aviation field but also the space and defense sectors. This year’s event is scheduled to continue until June 22.

Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak has announced his attendance at the fair, stating that he and the president of PLL LOT will unveil the results of the tender for the acquisition of over 80 aircraft intended for the carrier’s regional routes on Monday.

Two aircraft models are in contention: Embraer 195-E2 and Airbus A220.

– I am traveling to France with the president of LOT. Each year, the International Air Show takes place there, during which new aircraft purchase contracts are traditionally announced. We will reveal the results of the long-awaited tender procedure for LOT’s fleet on Monday afternoon, alongside the president of LOT – Klimczak informed on Friday during an appearance on TVN24.

Over 80 aircraft

When asked if he could disclose the chosen aircraft, he declined to do so.

– The news will surely be positive, as we have been anticipating the growth of our fleet for many years. Air traffic is on the rise. Ultimately, it will be over 80 planes – Klimczak stated.

Embraer has shown interest in providing its KC-390 transport aircraft to Poland, proposing to establish an assembly line there as part of a wider agreement that includes its E2 passenger aircraft.

Poland aims to procure a total of 80 or more regional aircraft, with approximately half being option purchases, to facilitate the expansion and development of the Central Communication Port by the early 2030s, as well as to enhance the central communication hub at Warsaw Chopin Airport.
