Political scientist on Mentzen's voters TVN24

If Donald Tusk's administration aims to secure success for its candidate, it must win over the support of entrepreneurs – writes Bloomberg. The report highlights that it is the business community that previously backed Sławomir Mentzen that could be pivotal in the second round.

Bloomberg pointed out that, according to the Ipsos poll, Rafał Trzaskowski garnered the highest number of votes among business leaders in the initial round. Nonetheless, nearly 20% of entrepreneurs expressed their support for the candidate with far-right perspectives, whose campaign message was „strong, rich Poland”.

Presidential elections 2025. Entrepreneurs will play a key role

As per Szymon Ossowski, a political scientist from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the voters for the Confederation candidate comprise individuals operating small enterprises outside of Warsaw, such as restaurants, beauty salons, and hairdressers. He believes these individuals perceive fewer advantages from Poland’s EU membership and are more acutely aware of the daily expenses associated with running a business and hiring staff.

– Entrepreneurs who cast their votes for Mentzen present a significant opportunity for Trzaskowski – stated Prof. Ossowski in an interview with Bloomberg. – He must secure their support if he has any aspirations of winning – stressed the political scientist.

Economy is a priority

The article referenced the findings of a survey involving members of the Beauty Razem organization, which represents around 100,000 Polish entrepreneurs and professionals in the cosmetics sector. The research, conducted prior to the first round of elections, indicated that 30.7 percent backed Trzaskowski, 27.4 percent supported Mentzen, and 6.7 percent favored Karol Nawrocki, the candidate endorsed by PiS.

– While ideological matters hold significance, the economy takes precedence – remarked Michał Łenczyński, president of Beauty Razem. – Many individuals are willing to vote contrary to their beliefs to compel politicians to address their business expectations – he added.

Bloomberg also cites the comments of the president of the Polish Business Roundtable, Wojciech Kostrzewa, who noted that Trzaskowski embodies „a symbol and guarantor of the pro-European stance” and will advocate for „a robust economic position, particularly within the EU”.

Good cooperation is important

Kostrzewa emphasized that Poland’s strong connections with the EU are vital for large corporations, whose investments abroad have surged significantly in recent years.

According to Bloomberg, for numerous Polish entrepreneurs, effective collaboration between the next president and Tusk’s administration could be essential for enacting the changes that businesses seek. Among these changes, the agency highlights the reduction of healthcare contributions for entrepreneurs, which was vetoed in May by current President Andrzej Duda.

The second round of the presidential elections, featuring Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki, will take place on June 1.
