Donald Tusk on increasing the tax-free amount TVN24

The tax-free threshold will not be raised in 2026; introducing it in 2027 may prove quite challenging, as stated by Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domański on Thursday.

On Thursday, during a press briefing, the Minister of Finance and Economy discussed the potential increase of the tax-free allowance, a promise made during the 2023 electoral campaign. Previously, Prime Minister Donald Tusk mentioned that there would be no rise in 2026, and that achieving this in 2027 would be very complicated.

Tax-Free Allowance. Domański: No increase in 2026

„I can only reiterate what the Prime Minister has said. There will be no increase in the tax-free allowance in 2026, and it may be quite difficult to implement in 2027, but the Ministry of Finance is exploring the feasibility of this solution,” Domański stated.

He pointed out that Poland allocates 5 percent of its GDP for defense, while the expense to raise the tax-exempt amount from the current PLN 30,000 to PLN 60,000 annually is estimated at PLN 54 billion.

Prime Minister: We are making efforts

„This will certainly not take place in 2026,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk remarked during TVN24’s „Fakty po Faktach” program regarding the tax-free allowance increase. This adjustment was part of the „hundred specifics” from the Civic Coalition’s 2023 campaign. „We are actively working on it,” the Prime Minister confirmed.

Responding to Piotr Kraśko’s comment that President-elect Karol Nawrocki might argue, „I would find funding for both defense and the increase of the tax-free amount, and here is my draft proposal,” the Prime Minister acknowledged this possibility.

„And I have no doubt that Mr. Nawrocki, once he assumes the presidency, will take every opportunity to express his opinions. I say this informally, and he will likely have some valid points at times. This is the nature of politics. However, I will be transparent about what we are accomplishing, what is feasible, and when,” he emphasized.

Donald Tusk assured that he „will genuinely strive to achieve this.” „Because I am deeply committed to all the fundamental pledges I made even before becoming prime minister. If this demands more time, I will also candidly keep you informed,” he stressed.
