Construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland. Prime Minister Tusk on the progress of work TVN24

PLN 60 billion of the overall budget allocated for the development of the first nuclear power facility is intended for Polish companies, stated Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday prior to the government assembly.

He noted that PLN 60 billion is the figure that the national budget will allocate for the construction of the inaugural nuclear power plant, although the total cost of the project is significantly higher.

– The Polish state is set to invest 60 billion zlotys, and we have established a principle that, in line with this investment, 60 billion zlotys of our expenditure on construction must be allocated to Polish firms – asserted the Prime Minister. The latest government estimates put the cost of building the plant at 192 billion zlotys. The facility in Pomerania will be constructed by the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium utilizing AP1000 technology.

Polish firms will assist in construction

Tusk mentioned that the investor for the power plant, the state-owned entity Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, in collaboration with Westinghouse, has identified six Polish firms capable of supplying components for the nuclear facility and the AP1000 reactor.

– We are commencing support for these companies. Alongside the Americans, they have initiated the quality certification process that qualifies them to engage in nuclear projects – highlighted the Prime Minister.

He disclosed that the selected firms include: Ferrum Welded Structures Plant, FAMAK, Energomontaż-Północ Gdynia, Mostostal Siedlce, Mostostal Kraków, and Mostostal Kielce.

– The Americans have expressed interest in these companies collaborating with Westinghouse and supplying their products not just in Poland. When Westinghouse embarks on building nuclear facilities in other locations, they would like to consider them as permanent partners – Tusk remarked.

Plan for the establishment of a nuclear power plant in Poland

The identification of six Polish suppliers capable of undertaking tasks associated with nuclear safety and possessing the highest qualifications for constructing a nuclear power plant was reported to PAP by Dan Lipman, Head of Westinghouse Energy Systems Division, at the beginning of May this year. As Lipman pointed out, Westinghouse aims to involve Polish suppliers in additional markets, such as Sweden, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Finland, and potentially Ukraine, where plans exist to construct AP1000 type reactors.

– I envision Poland as part of this ecosystem. It is crucial to keep this perspective for the long haul – Lipman emphasized.

The investor and operator of the inaugural Polish nuclear power facility at Lubiatowo-Kopalino in Pomerania will be the fully state-owned company PEJ. The plant is expected to feature three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. According to the current timetable, the initial nuclear concrete for the first reactor is projected to be poured in 2028, with the first unit anticipated to commence commercial operations in 2036.

The Prime Minister also announced that in the upcoming hours, a competitive dialogue process for the general contractor of the CPK airport passenger terminal would commence. He stressed that the Central Communication Port company’s responsibility is to conduct tender processes in a manner that ensures Polish companies benefit from construction contracts.
