Renting Electronics Instead of Buying: A New Trend

Cameras are now only for vacations, and the latest smartphones are available for testing. The trend of equipment rental is on the rise, as reported by Monday’s „Rzeczpospolita”.
„A new trend is emerging in Poland – the rental of consumer electronics rather than purchasing them. This option is more economical than buying, and it enables users to upgrade their devices to the newest models each year,” the article highlights.
It further notes that the number of consumers looking to rent is increasing, as is the number of businesses providing office supplies and equipment to staff in this manner. Several domestic and international firms are already active in this market, seeking to capitalize on it. According to „Rz,” the demand is so substantial that even well-known electronics retailers like Media Markt and X-kom have started to offer these services.
Significant growth
Reports indicate that „globally, this sector, referred to as DaaS (device as a service), is expanding at an annual rate of 30 percent, with Poland experiencing even more rapid growth.” „Companies within this field are renting out computers, gaming consoles, TVs, projectors, smartwatches, drones, and even coffee machines,” the publication noted.
It was clarified that „this type of service enables users to rent a camera or camcorder solely for the length of their vacation, and permits business owners to supply their employees with devices like smartphones and tablets.”
Expanding market
As Przemysław Kazanowski, Head of Supply at Plenti, shared with „Rz,” „the rental market for consumer electronics in Poland is projected to reach €200 million by 2024-2025.” „In comparison, this segment in Europe is already valued at €7.5 billion,” he noted.
According to Cognitive Market Research, Europe currently represents 30 percent of the worldwide electronics equipment rental market.
