Shopping Sunday – are shops open on August 31, 2025?

This Sunday signifies the fifth shopping Sunday of the year, allowing consumers the opportunity to shop in larger retail stores and malls. As per the regulations, the next three exceptions are slated for December 2025.
On Sunday, August 31st, shopping will be permitted in stores. The upcoming shopping Sundays are: December 7th, December 14th, and December 21st.

Sunday trading ban
The legislation gradually implementing the Sunday trading prohibition took effect on March 1, 2018. Starting in 2020, the trading restriction applies only to seven Sundays each year: the last Sundays of January, April, June, and August, the Sunday preceding Easter, and, following an amendment, also the three consecutive Sundays leading up to Christmas.
The law limiting Sunday trading outlines a total of 32 exceptions. The prohibition does not apply to postal services, provided that their revenue accounts for at least 40% of the outlet’s total sales. Additionally, it exempts confectioneries, ice cream shops, gas stations, florists, newsstands, and cafes.
Breaching the Sunday trading prohibition can result in fines ranging from PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000, and repeated violations may lead to restrictions on liberty.
Christmas Eve is a day off
As of February 1, an amendment was enacted designating December 24th as a mandatory day off for all employees, including those in retail, for whom Christmas Eve was previously a working day until 2 p.m. According to the new regulations, the three Sundays leading up to Christmas Eve will be open for trading. Moreover, the amendment specifies that retail employees cannot work more than two Sundays in December.
At the close of December last year, President Andrzej Duda decided to submit the law concerning a free Christmas Eve to the Constitutional Tribunal for a retrospective review. The president’s concerns relate to the inclusion of an additional third working Sunday in December for retail employees.
