Three-quarters of Poles frequently utilize cashless payment methods, with 39.2 percent indicating that they always or nearly always pay this way, based on a study commissioned by Fiserv Polska. The demographic most inclined to use cashless payments is those aged 18-29, with 53.4 percent claiming they always or almost always opt for this payment method.

Cashless payments gain popularity among Poles

„39.3% of Poles always or almost always utilize cashless payments. 25.3% make these payments very often, several times a week, while 10.3% do so once a week. Conversely, 11.4% of respondents state that they never engage in cashless payments,” according to the report from the study „Payment Preferences of Poles 2025,” conducted by IBRiS on behalf of Fiserv Polska, which owns the PolCard brand.

Individuals aged 18-29 are the most frequent users of cashless payments. 53.4% always or almost always select this option, reflecting an increase of over 6 percentage points compared to the last survey iteration. Notably, there is a gradually rising percentage of seniors utilizing digital payment options, with 67.8% of individuals aged 60 and above now regularly opting for these tools.

„Cashless payments are also increasingly common among residents of rural areas. In this year’s survey results, 36.4 percent of participants from these regions reported that they always or almost always use this payment method. However, digital payments remain most popular in large cities with populations exceeding 250,000 (56.2 percent),” the survey report indicates.

The findings reveal that card payments remain the most favored method of cashless transactions, with 7 out of 10 respondents utilizing this option. Card payments are particularly favored by seniors (89.5%). Physical cards also dominate in rural settings, with 76.4% of respondents from these areas preferring them. Conversely, young Poles aged 18-29 are the least likely to choose cards, with results nearly evenly split between card payments (38.6%) and Blik (36.7%).

BLIK comes in second

„The second most popular payment method in the country is BLIK, utilized by 14.8% of respondents. Other notable cashless payment options selected by Poles include Google Pay (6.3%) and Apple Pay (5.5%),” the report states. It also mentions that by the end of December 2024, there were 1.4 million payment terminals installed in Poland, with an increase of 10.5 thousand in Q4 2024. „(…) over the last year, most participants have used solutions such as loyalty card payments or vouchers (22.4%), refunding purchases to the card account (18.6%), and the option to leave a tip (14.8%). Additionally, 12.5% of Poles have chosen to withdraw cash from a store’s cash register, while 8.2% have made donations to charitable organizations through a terminal or self-service checkout during their purchases,” the report elaborates.

Survey details

The survey was conducted through standardized computer-assisted telephone interviews by the Institute of Market and Social Research (IBRiS) in May 2025, involving a representative sample of one thousand adult Poles.
