The prohibition on carrying electronics in hand luggage and the 100-milliliter limit for liquids at Warsaw Chopin Airport is set to be lifted. This change will be facilitated by the acquisition of advanced scanners that the airport intends to invest in.

„Currently, two consortiums are competing in a tender for the new scanners. We aim to commence the installation of these scanners as soon as possible, right after the conclusion of the 2025 summer season,” stated Anna Dermont, spokesperson for Polish Airports (PPL) and Chopin Airport.

She mentioned that the procedure involves a total of 15 security screening lines.

New scanners to be implemented in Warsaw

„The upcoming scanners will adhere to the latest standards, allowing electronics to remain in hand luggage and permitting the inspection of liquid containers over 100 ml, which will greatly expedite the security screening process,” she elaborated.

She noted that PPL plans to deploy similar scanners at airports in Radom and Zielona Góra in the future.

Modifications to EU regulations

Recently, the European Commission approved the removal of liquid restrictions at certain airports. At facilities utilizing a specific type of security scanner, the 100ml limit on liquids in carry-on baggage will be eliminated. There are 700 such devices across 21 EU member states.

These are the next-generation C3 airport security scanners equipped with an explosive detection system. They employ computed tomography technology to generate detailed 3D images of luggage, enhancing the detection of prohibited items.

In Poland, the airports in Lublin and Poznań have already adopted these scanners. Lublin Airport became the first in the nation to launch two lanes equipped with modern CT scanners for passenger carry-on baggage in February of this year. In April, Poznań-Ławica Airport initiated security lines featuring modern Standard III baggage scanners.

New technology leads to relaxed regulations

By the end of the year, such scanners are expected to be operational at Jasionka Airport, where the procurement process is currently in progress. Likewise, Kraków Airport is eager to implement the new EU regulations as swiftly as possible.

„The equipment we possess is listed among the devices that will facilitate the lifting of these restrictions; however, to fully replace the existing protocols, it must still undergo the appropriate certification process. We anticipate this will occur promptly,” stated Kraków Airport spokeswoman Monika Chylaszek to PAP.

Due to a technical complication, the European Commission enforced a temporary halt on the use of new devices last year. The recent decision by the EC has cleared the way for a particular type of advanced scanner. At airports utilizing these scanners, passengers will no longer need to extract liquids and laptops from their bags during security checks, and the 100ml liquid limit for carry-on luggage will also be lifted at these locations.
