Donald Tusk on increasing the tax-free amount TVN24

„This will certainly not occur in 2026,” stated Prime Minister Donald Tusk during TVN24’s „Fakty po Faktach” program regarding the enhancement of the tax-free allowance. The proposed increase was among the „hundred specifics” outlined in the Civic Coalition’s 2023 campaign. „We are actively working on it,” the Prime Minister confirmed.

„When we finalize the project on the tax-free allowance along with the timing—specifically when and how much—I will inform you in detail. It will definitely not be in 2026,” Donald Tusk mentioned in an interview with Piotr Kraśka.

The Prime Minister assured that the government is making progress on a tax-free amount, but highlighted that presently, Poland allocates 5% of its budget for defense expenditures.

– Given that we have the highest spending in Europe, few nations globally invest as much in defense, because we face a genuine threat due to the ongoing hybrid war in our midst and a conventional war just beyond our borders. The resources we allocate for armaments, the Polish army, and national security are significantly beyond what I initially anticipated – he remarked.

Government vs. President

In reaction to Piotr Kraśko’s comment that President-elect Karol Nawrocki might assert, „I would secure funding for both defense and an increase in the tax-free amount, and here’s my draft bill,” the Prime Minister acknowledged this possibility.

„I have no doubt that Mr. Nawrocki, upon assuming the presidency, will do everything to provoke. I say this informally, and he may have his arguments at times. That is the essence of politics. However, I will be transparent about our actions, what is feasible, and the timelines,” he stressed.

Donald Tusk assured that he „will genuinely try.” „I am deeply committed to all the fundamental promises I made even before taking office as prime minister. If it requires additional time, I will honestly keep you updated,” he affirmed.

„However, I will not permit Mr. Nawrocki, once he is inaugurated as president, to politically undermine the government. I am well-versed in the Constitution, particularly regarding the delineation of powers between the presidency and the government. The president, and I emphasize this to Mr. Nawrocki, must take note: the president in Poland serves as the representative of the Polish state, as stated in the Constitution, while the Council of Ministers conducts foreign and domestic policy. I am accountable for that, and that will not change,” he concluded.

Karol Nawrocki stated, among other things, in an interview with „Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” that as president, he will endorse a law establishing a tax-free allowance of PLN 60,000 annually, and if the Sejm does not pass such legislation soon, he will initiate a legislative proposal on the matter.

At present, the tax-free allowance stands at 30,000 złoty. Its increase was one of the one hundred specific objectives presented by the Civic Coalition for the parliamentary elections. Thus far, this goal remains unfulfilled.
