Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration on the organization of border controls with Germany and Lithuania TVN24

The transportation sector has raised alarms regarding the reinstatement of temporary border checks with Lithuania and Germany. It has been emphasized that this additional hurdle may compel many carriers to „halt this presently unprofitable endeavor”.

Starting from July 7, border controls with Germany and Lithuania will be reinstated for a duration of 30 days, as per the regulation from the Ministry of Interior and Administration, which was published in the Journal of Laws on Thursday.

Concerns of Carriers Regarding Border Controls

„Carriers are exerting considerable effort to bolster our nation’s budget. Simultaneously, they are striving to remain afloat with their final resources. Another obstacle in the form of border checks could lead many to opt to cease this currently unprofitable activity,” stated the Association of International Road Carriers in a release.

The sector anticipates concrete measures to facilitate smooth transit for carriers.

„I am eagerly awaiting Monday, as my extensive experience leads me to believe that – unlike the German inspections – ours will be „stringent”. Border Guard officers will establish roadblocks and we will all find ourselves ensnared in traffic jams for hours. This will have severe repercussions for both carriers and consumers,” remarked Jan Buczek, president of ZMPD, as quoted in the press statement.

Reinstatement of Border Controls

Prime Minister Donald Tusk clarified on Tuesday that the temporary reinstatement of checks at these borders is essential to mitigate uncontrolled migration flows. According to the announced regulation, border checks for individuals will be reintroduced at the state boundary with the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Lithuania from July 7 to August 5.

The extent of this control will be adjusted based on the level of threat to public order or state security in relation to the „existence of a significant risk of illegal immigration”.

The rationale for the regulation indicates that the necessity to restore control arises from an evaluation of the migration landscape. According to data from the Ministry of Interior and Administration, from January 1 to June 29, 2025, there were 15,022 attempts to unlawfully cross the Polish-Belarusian border. Of this figure, about 5% of individuals either crossed the barrier or entered the border at another point and were not apprehended directly at the state border line. The ministry underscores that while pressure on the Polish-Belarusian border has diminished, it has escalated in Lithuania and Latvia.
