In the coming weeks, we will find out which Taiwanese firms will invest in the so-called semiconductor triangle – Łódź, Katowice, and Wrocław – as stated by Michał Jaros, the Deputy Minister of Development and Technology. Visits from Taiwanese investors to these cities are planned.

At a conference held in Łódź, Deputy Minister Jaros outlined the idea of a „Polish semiconductor triangle,” which is founded on the collaboration of three cities – Łódź, Katowice, and Wrocław. The initiative to attract Taiwanese investments to these three selected locations is anticipated to be executed following a recommendation from TEEMA (Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association), which represents over 3,000 companies within Taiwan’s electronics sector.

„Polish Semiconductor Triangle”

„The Taiwanese have already made investments in Łódź, and they identified Łódź and Poland as potential investment destinations. They recognize the opportunities that Poland offers. We rank as the twentieth largest economy globally,” Jaros mentioned.

He pointed out that Taiwanese enterprises have been established in the Czech Republic for over two decades. Investors are also developing a semiconductor company in Dresden, which, according to Jaros, positions Poland, with its hub in Wrocław, within this triangle. The „semiconductor triangle” consisting of Dresden, Prague, and Wrocław will soon be complemented by a similar triangle (Wrocław, Katowice, and Łódź) focusing on the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) sector.

He further noted that both Poland and Europe require semiconductor manufacturing, and the aim of the initiatives by the government and local authorities of Łódź and the Łódź Voivodeship is to attract not only manufacturers but also associated companies that contribute to the entire supply chain.

„The Taiwanese expressed to me directly: you have 50,000 software companies, and we have hardware. We must collaborate. We need to organize this production at a European scale. And this European production can be established in Poland,” Jaros added.

„We have been building the trust of the Taiwanese people for many years”

Mayor of Łódź, Hanna Zdanowska, highlighted that the city has been nurturing relationships with businesses in Asia for years, primarily with firms from Japan and Taiwan, and that the collaboration with Asian companies is grounded in previously established trust and relationships.

„We have been fostering the trust of the Taiwanese for many years, and I recently signed a partnership agreement with Tainan – a significant city also linked to semiconductor manufacturing. This agreement enables Łódź and Tainan to cultivate mutual relations in cultural, educational, and primarily business contexts,” Zdanowska stated.

She expressed her aspiration to transform Łódź into a contemporary semiconductor production hub.

Adam Pustelnik, vice-president of Łódź, spoke directly about the significance of Taiwanese investments in Poland: „A semiconductor is a component without which the technology that is rapidly transforming our lives, affecting the job market, and impacting nearly everything cannot operate.”

– If a city, a country, or a region aspires to a prosperous future, it must consider the technologies, solutions, and industries that will shape that future – he added.

Visits of Taiwanese investors to Poland

Pustelnik announced that in the latter half of the year and towards its end, visits from high-level Taiwanese investors and company owners from Taiwan are scheduled in Poland, particularly in the cities of the „semiconductor triangle,” and a high-level business summit with partners is anticipated at the year’s conclusion.

Tomasz Sadzyński, president of the Łódź Special Economic Zone and participant in a recent trade mission to Taiwan, mentioned that several hundred representatives from the innovation industry of the Łódź Special Economic Zone are expected in Łódź in October. Among them are representatives from the European Space Agency and potentially the head of the Taiwanese space agency, to whom he has already extended an invitation.
