Ministry on freezing electricity prices. „The whole year” versus „the plan is clear”

Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, Minister of Funds, stated that energy price freezes should be implemented for the entire year. Meanwhile, Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate, mentioned that a decrease in energy prices might indicate that freezing may not be required in the fourth quarter.
– I believe that energy prices ought to be frozen for the whole year. The concept of freezing for only three quarters is unclear to me. People deserve reliable solutions, and maintaining energy prices frozen for the full year appears to be a sensible approach – remarked Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, during her appearance on TOK FM on Monday.
As stated by Paulina Hennig-Kloska, who leads the Ministry of Finance and Public Relations as well as the Ministry of Climate and Environment, she advocates for an all-year freeze on energy prices. – From my discussions with the Minister, it seems her goal was a year-long energy price freeze – Pełczyńska-Nałęcz added.
Minister of Climate on Freezing Electricity Prices
Hennig-Kloska noted, „the agenda for this year is straightforward, unchanged from the start.”
– We intend to examine tariffs around mid-year. Companies will submit tariff proposals reflecting shifts in wholesale energy prices, and based on that – the government will determine if further freezing (of electricity prices – ed.) is warranted, or if the tariffs will already reflect prices at PLN 500 or below, thus making freezing unnecessary – explained the minister.
Hennig-Kloska pointed out that reports from energy companies suggest that freezing energy prices in the fourth quarter of 2025 may not be required.
– We should await the tariff applications from the companies; we will reevaluate them, but I am confident that by the last quarter of this year, we will reduce the tariffs to the maximum price level, and further freezing of energy prices will not be necessary – she continued.
She also highlighted that last year, wholesale electricity prices decreased by over PLN 100 per MWh.
When asked if the ministry was leaving room for maneuver in case energy prices did not decline by year-end, the minister acknowledged that „we have some reserves from the (price freeze – ed.) program, which will also facilitate intervention in the last quarter if necessary.”
According to current regulations, the maximum energy price for households set at PLN 500/MWh will remain in effect until the end of September 2025. The zero rate for the so-called capacity fee for households is set to continue until June of this year.
