Nuclear power plant in Poland. Donald Tusk: Poland has negotiated a new bridging agreement

– Poland has finalized a new interim agreement with contractors for a nuclear power plant – Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced during a briefing. He mentioned that this agreement is „significantly more favorable” for Poland.
– The discussions surrounding the interim agreement with contractors for the first Polish nuclear power plant have reached completion. We are proceeding with its construction. We have concluded an agreement with our American partners that is considerably more advantageous for us – he stated.
He further noted that the previous administration failed to ensure the inclusion of the General Prosecutor’s Office in the agreement, which, in the Prime Minister’s view, placed Poland at a disadvantage during the negotiations.

Nuclear power plant in Poland. Contract expiration
In 2023, PEJ (Polish Nuclear Power Plants), Westinghouse, and Bechtel entered into an agreement to design the first nuclear power plant in Poland, set to be constructed in Pomerania.
„Rzeczpospolita” reported on Tuesday that the contract for the design of the nuclear power plant, which was signed in the fall of 2023, will expire at the end of March. „However, the partners are still deliberating on the next steps, and there are no indications of a potential interim agreement during these discussions,” the newspaper stated.
„Given the current lack of opportunity to sign a contract for the construction of a power plant in Pomerania, an interim contract would be necessary for the duration of the negotiations. However, this should be executed once the project contract expires,” the publication reported.
Compensation for farmers
The Prime Minister also announced financial relief for farmers impacted by drought and flooding.
– We have reached an agreement with farmers regarding compensation for the consequences of floods and drought. This totals PLN 600 million – PLN 350 million for those affected by drought, covering various sectors such as apiaries and corn (…). For flood victims who incurred agricultural losses, the compensation amounts to PLN 250 million. The total is PLN 600 million – stated the head of government.
He emphasized that the Council of Ministers recognizes that these compensatory measures do not fully cover the losses faced by all farmers. – This is quite challenging, but we have conducted a thorough assessment of the impact of drought and floods as accurately as possible. Everyone wishes to receive more, yet, at this moment, this allocation of 600 million zlotys represents a significant effort considering the funds available to the government and the Minister of Agriculture – he added.
Border controls
Tusk also addressed the topic of transport inspections at the borders with Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany in relation to foot-and-mouth disease.
– We will enhance inspections at the borders with Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany to prevent the entry of transports from regions affected by foot-and-mouth disease into Poland – Tusk informed journalists.
– I am confident that these measures will yield the desired outcome and avert the occurrence of foot-and-mouth disease. My hope is nearly certain – he added.
