France’s Le Figaro highlights Poland as a nation experiencing economic prosperity and bolstering its defense capabilities, which the publication underscores as making it „one of the pivotal nations” in maintaining stability in Europe. The newspaper questions whether the outcome of the presidential election might jeopardize „this remarkable trajectory.”

Le Figaro evaluates Poland’s progress since the end of communism as a success story, reflected in an article titled „Poland is emerging as a power, but what will it do with it?”.

As the publication points out, „its increasing economic and industrial strength has emboldened Warsaw, enabling it to fulfill its geopolitical responsibilities as a cornerstone state in Eastern Europe amidst aggressive revisionism” from Russia.

„Will he be able to sidestep the specters of division?”

This „Polish moment” ought to be leveraged „not only in Warsaw, but also in Paris, Berlin, London, and Brussels,” stresses Le Figaro.

However, it notes that Poland „will face significant questions – will it manage to evade the specters of division that have frequently weighed down its future?” „The possibility of paralysis within (Donald) Tusk’s government if the PiS candidate prevails in the second round of the presidential election makes this inquiry particularly pertinent,” it asserts.

„Will the anxiety of disappearance, so deeply ingrained in the Polish national psyche, play a constructive role in enhancing the country’s position as a stronghold of European defense, safeguarding Ukraine and the Baltic states? Or will Poland opt for withdrawal, exacerbating fatigue with its Ukrainian neighbor – as indicated by the significant support for the far right in the first round of elections,” the publication reflects.

What lies ahead for Poland’s relations with the USA?

It poses additional questions: „How will Poland navigate its relationship with Trump’s America, which appears to be focusing on special ties with Warsaw to counterbalance the current strengthening of the European defense initiative? Will this help alleviate transatlantic tensions?”

Le Figaro emphasizes that the answers to these questions will depend not only on Poland but also on „Paris, Berlin, and London.”

It also observes that Poland is unlikely to relinquish American assurances, even if diminished, in favor of the „shadow of European defense.”
