PKP Intercity’s hybrid trains are set to commence passenger services starting in 2027, as stated by the company’s president, Janusz Malinowski. He noted that these new trains will reduce travel times on routes that are partially electrified.

PKP Intercity hybrid trains will begin service in 2027, aiming to reduce travel durations on partially electrified routes, as reported by CEO Janusz Malinowski to PAP. He mentioned that this pertains to 35 trains expected to be operational by 2029.

Travel time is set to decrease

– The rollout of hybrid multiple units will expand PKP Intercity’s offerings, totaling 35 trains. They are slated to be progressively introduced into service from 2027 to 2029 – stated Malinowski.

The president clarified that hybrid trains will lessen the travel time of services currently run by electric and diesel locomotives since there will be no requirement to change locomotives mid-journey.

– I believe we will soon be ready to unveil a detailed timetable, outlining the railway lines where hybrid trains will operate and which towns they will connect – remarked Malinowski.

New PKP Intercity trains

Last July, PKP Intercity finalized a contract with Newag valued at over PLN 3.3 billion for the procurement of 35 hybrid diesel-electric trains.

The new trains will achieve speeds of 160 km/h in electric mode and 120 km/h when running on diesel. They will accommodate 178 passengers – with 154 seats in second class and 20 in first class. Additionally, the trains will include four seats designated for individuals with disabilities and their companions.
