The Ministry of Finance has issued a warning about scammers impersonating official services, such as Your e-PIT, e-TOLL, or the e-Tax Office. Cybercriminals are attempting to extract taxpayers’ personal information through text messages, emails, and counterfeit websites.

The ministry indicated that the activity of these scammers tends to escalate during the tax return submission period.

MF issues a warning about scammers

It was also noted that these fraudsters send deceptive text messages or emails related to matters such as tax refunds, necessary corrections, data updates, notifications from the tax office, and alerts from applications. The messages encourage recipients to click on harmful links or attachments. Clicking on such a link may redirect the user to a site that requests sensitive information. The Ministry of Finance has stressed that this represents an attempt to gather personal data illicitly.

„The most frequent fraudulent attempts arise when users access our most utilized services: e-Tax Office, Your e-PIT, e-TOLL, e-Financial Reports. Therefore, we urge everyone to exercise heightened caution, particularly now, during the final days of tax return submissions,” remarked Deputy Minister of Finance and Deputy Head of KAS Małgorzata Krok, as quoted in the ministry’s press release.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the actions of these scammers are aimed at acquiring confidential information. Users may be prompted to share their PESEL number, bank account details, email passwords, phone numbers, or other sensitive information. These actions may also be intended to extort money.

Counterfeit sites are hard to identify

The counterfeit websites created by scammers frequently resemble the original sites of the Ministry of Finance and can be challenging to differentiate from the real ones, the ministry stated. Consequently, it is crucial to pay close attention to the link description in the website address. Fake website URLs may include commas instead of periods, minor inaccuracies, typographical errors, or additional characters.

The Ministry has reminded the public that confidential information should never be shared with anyone, particularly after receiving suspicious emails or text messages requesting such data.

If you have any uncertainty about an email or text message you have received, or if someone has contacted you pretending to be a tax office employee requesting sensitive information, we encourage you to call the KAS hotline to clarify the matter: 22 330 03 30.

All cybersecurity incidents can also be reported via the CERT platform.
