Construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland. „An important milestone”

Polish Nuclear Power Plants (PEJ) have officially informed the European Commission about the investment project aimed at establishing Poland’s inaugural nuclear power plant. This is a crucial step towards realizing the investment.
According to the PEJ press release, the notification encompasses a comprehensive description of the project, which aims to „construct a contemporary, secure, and low-emission nuclear power plant in Pomerania.” Simultaneously, a notification process is in progress regarding state assistance for the first Polish nuclear facility.
What does investment project notification entail?
The Polish Nuclear Power Plant (PEJ) highlighted that the notification of an investment project under the Euratom Treaty is distinct from the notification procedure for state assistance for a government-initiated project. The notification mandated by the Euratom Treaty is a legal obligation for nuclear initiatives within European Union Member States.
Its aim is to allow the European Commission to evaluate the project concerning its adherence to the goals of the Euratom Treaty, particularly regarding safety, technical, and economic factors of the project.
„The investor’s submission of the project to the European Commission, as per the Euratom Treaty, marks a significant milestone in the realization of the first Polish nuclear power plant. The advancements in the development of the first Polish nuclear power plant demonstrate our commitment to providing Poland with a secure and stable energy source for many years ahead,” remarked Wojciech Wrochna, the government’s representative for strategic energy infrastructure, as quoted in the press release.
The forthcoming step is the European Commission’s opinion
Marek Woszczyk, President of the Polish Nuclear Power Plants, pointed out that the notification outlined in Article 41 of the Euratom Treaty is one of the essential phases in the investment preparation process.
„This also signifies our dedication to executing the project in alignment with the highest standards set by the European Union. By notifying the project, we affirm the progress already achieved in carrying out the investment and our proactive stance toward subsequent implementation actions,” he emphasized.
The notification procedure will culminate in obtaining an opinion from the European Commission regarding the project for the first nuclear power plant in Poland. This opinion is necessary, among other things, to secure a construction permit from the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency.
Plans for constructing a nuclear power plant in Poland
The initial Polish nuclear power plant is slated for construction in Pomerania, specifically at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino location within the Choczewo commune. The project entails the establishment of three AP1000 reactors, each boasting a gross capacity of 1250 MWe. As per the information provided by PEJ, the AP1000 reactors represent modern Generation III/III+ technology, characterized by efficiency, reliability, and comprehensive safety systems.
The power plant is projected to satisfy the electricity demands of more than 12 million households in Poland. The design phase is currently in progress, with geotechnical surveys being conducted at the future plant site. The findings will inform the design of the facility and aid in acquiring the necessary permits to initiate construction. The first power unit is anticipated to commence operations in 2036.
