„A new piece of Poland”. It gained a postal code

„A new piece of Poland,” a headland situated near Mikoszewo, has been assigned a postal code, according to Poczta Polska. The state-owned entity emphasizes that a postal code is a vital component of all addresses, with each digit corresponding to a particular section of the area.
Poczta Polska, referencing media sources, highlighted that a headland has recently emerged in Mikoszewo, positioned between Gdańsk and Krynica Morska. This formation is the result of natural processes, primarily due to sea currents and storms.
„Poczta Polska announces that the new piece of Poland holds the postal code 82-103, with the relevant office for its servicing located in Stegna at ul. Gdańska 30,” the operator stated in a release. It clarified that the headland was assigned to the postal code currently in use in the surrounding area.
What does postal code mean?
In the communication provided, Poczta explained that the postal code is a crucial aspect of all addresses. It comprises five digits, separated by a hyphen after the first two digits (e.g., 00-940; 10-900). The organization elaborated that the structure of the code, or Postal Address Number, originates from the segmentation of Poland into postal districts during the 1970s.
The initial digit of the postal code designates the postal district, the second specifies the coding zone and section of the district where the address is located, while the third digit helps to pinpoint a specific area within the postal zone. The division of code district identifiers was established from Warsaw, moving approximately in a clockwise direction. According to the information provided by Poczta Polska, the digit 0 represents the Warsaw district, 1 – Olsztyn, 2 – Lublin, 3 – Krakow, 4 – Katowice, 5 – Wroclaw, 6 – Poznan, 7 – Szczecin, 8 – Gdansk, and 9 – Lodz district.
Postcode system
The company reminded that the postal code system was implemented in Poland on January 1, 1973, by directive of the Minister of Communications. This regulation aimed to streamline the sorting and delivery of mail. It was noted that sorting by numbers expedited postal operations and decreased the frequency of delivery errors, which were common before, especially in instances where multiple towns shared the same name. The authors of the statement pointed out that postal code systems are in operation in most countries worldwide, albeit with significant variations in structure and format. For instance, in the United States, ZIP codes are utilized, starting with five digits and later expanded to the ZIP+4 format, which adds four more digits for greater accuracy in location. In the United Kingdom, postal codes follow an alphanumeric pattern, such as „SW1A 1AA,” where letters and numbers signify a specific area and street. Japan employs a postal code system consisting of seven-digit numbers in the „XXX-XXXX” format, with the postal symbol „〒” preceding it. „Postal codes are essential not only for postal logistics but also in various other sectors. They are utilized in courier service planning, demographic studies, urban development, and even marketing, where they assist in the precise organization of advertising strategies,” the company emphasized.
Collection of postal codes
The compilation of postal codes is available in the Official Directory of Postal Address Numbers at every post office and on the company’s website. The operator also stated that the postal code database is constructed based on the TERYT database (National Official Register of Territorial Division of the Country) and encompasses all locations across the nation. Poczta Polska, a state treasury enterprise, employs around 62 thousand individuals and operates a network comprising 7.6 thousand offices, branches, and postal agencies throughout the country.
