Sikorski has a question for Nawrocki
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski inquired on social media about the high tariffs that Donald Trump is „suggesting” to be applied to the European Union, directed towards the Law and Justice-backed presidential candidate for Poland, Karol Nawrocki.
„I am curious to know if Karol Nawrocki supports or opposes President Donald Trump’s proposal of imposing a 50 percent tariff on the European Union,” the foreign minister posted on social media.
Trump Tariffs
On Friday, US President Donald Trump declared that he was „recommending” a 50% tariff on imports from the EU starting June 1. He noted that trade negotiations with the EU had stalled. „The European Union, which was primarily established to take advantage of the United States in trade, is quite challenging to negotiate with,” Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social.
This past March, the US implemented a 25% tariff on cars, steel, and aluminum imports from the EU, followed by a 20% tariff on other imports from the bloc in April. Subsequently, Trump announced a 90-day pause on the increased tariffs, concluding on July 8. During this period, negotiations regarding tariffs are expected to continue while a 10% tariff remains in effect.
Meeting in the Oval Office
In early May, Polish presidential hopeful Karol Nawrocki visited the US. While in Washington, he had a brief meeting in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump. In an interview with Telewizja Republika, he mentioned that he and Trump discussed the elections in Poland.
At that time, PiS promoted Nawrocki’s „success.” However, representatives of the ruling coalition had a different perspective. „What did Nawrocki accomplish in the Oval Office, something for himself or for Poland?” questioned Szymon Hołownia, the Third Way candidate, before the first round of the presidential elections. – „This clearly illustrates the priorities of Law and Justice and this candidate’s focus on positioning themselves in opposition to the United States rather than building alliances within the European Union,” commented Left candidate Magdalena Biejat.
