Starting Wednesday, Kraków Airport will eliminate its restrictions on liquid carry-on items, as announced by airport CEO Łukasz Strutyński on Tuesday. This change is facilitated by the installation of 10 advanced CT scanners at security checkpoints.

The management of Kraków Airport highlighted that it will be the first airport in Poland to remove the limit on liquids in hand luggage.

Airports are lifting liquid limits

On July 9th, the European Commission sanctioned the removal of liquid restrictions at several airports. Airports equipped with a specific type of security scanner will no longer enforce the 100ml limit on liquids in carry-on baggage.

There are 700 such devices across the EU, located in 21 member nations. These are next-generation C3 airport security scanners that feature explosive detection systems. They utilize computed tomography technology to produce detailed 3D images of luggage, enhancing the detection of unauthorized items.

„Kraków Airport has been among the initial airports in Poland to pilot this technology for several months. Starting tomorrow, travelers at Kraków Airport will no longer face the existing restrictions on liquid carry-ons,” Strutyński stated.

The airport authorities estimate that this new measure will decrease the time required for checking each individual by nearly 30 percent.

– With this innovation, even on peak days when our airport serves up to 48,000 passengers in a single day, most of them will experience security check wait times of no more than 10 minutes – the president of Kraków Airport added.

He noted that the introduction of CT scanners will make security screenings quicker, more accurate, and more comfortable for passengers, while also significantly enhancing the efficiency of the services responsible for inspecting hand luggage.

New control rules

As of Wednesday, travelers at Kraków Airport will be allowed to carry larger containers and liquids in their hand luggage—up to two liters (such as water, cosmetics, or perfume). Additionally, they will no longer need to remove liquids and electronic devices (laptops, tablets, phones) during security inspections, streamlining the check-in process and reducing lines.

Strutyński announced that three checkpoints equipped with older scanners will remain temporarily operational at Kraków Airport, where the limit will still be enforced, but these will only be activated in case of emergencies.

Kraków Airport ranks as the second largest in Poland by passenger volume and is the largest regional airport. Last year, it served nearly 11.1 million passengers, with projections of reaching 13 million this year. The current summer schedule features 160 routes to 114 cities across 35 countries, provided by 28 airlines.
