Vacancies are dwindling in these industries

What is occurring in the labor market? As per the Job Offer Barometer, there was a decrease in job listings for manual laborers in July of this year compared to the same timeframe last year. Conversely, there was an uptick in postings for graduates in scientific fields.
The Job Offer Barometer, developed by the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów along with the Bureau of Investment and Economic Cycles (BIEC), which monitors alterations in the volume of online job advertisements, saw a slight increase in July, achieving 258.5 points. The report indicated that the recorded unemployment rate, excluding individuals engaged solely in seasonal work, rose by 0.3 percentage points in June, reaching 5.4 percent. This marks the highest rate and a singular change in several years, as noted in the report.
No notable changes for a year and a half
The number of job vacancies in July this year mirrored last year’s figures. The landscape for professions in social sciences and services has not shifted. Simultaneously, there has been a downturn in job offerings for manual laborers and an increase in vacancies for science graduates. The reduction in postings for manual laborers has been ongoing for four months, whereas the rise for science graduates has continued for eight months. The authors of the barometer attributed the increase in the latter category to the resurgence of hiring in IT and construction.
The highest volume of new job listings emerged in the Lublin, Podkarpackie, and West Pomeranian Voivodeships. A drop was recorded only in the Lubusz and Warmian-Masurian Voivodeships. „The nationwide count of job postings has remained stable for the last year and a half, and the situation is akin in most voivodeships,” the authors pointed out.
Declines in legal and office professions
Among professions necessitating education in social sciences or law, the highest number of job vacancies in July were for call center operators, graphic designers, and finance experts. Following a prolonged period of decline, the number of openings for graphic designers has stabilized, albeit at a historically low level. „Temporary” increases are noted in marketing, where vacancies have been on the rise for the past six months.
The most significant declines compared to June were seen in the real estate sector and among legal and office professions. Job openings in legal positions have been diminishing for five months, with the pace of decline quickening monthly. Office-based roles have been decreasing for four months.
In the fields of science and engineering, job vacancies increased across all categories except for those specifically tied to engineering. This marks the fifth consecutive month of decline in that category, although the decrease was minimal. Engineers remain the only segment in this profession group experiencing ongoing reductions.
The highest number of job postings were for programmers, research and development (R&D) personnel, and occupational health and safety (OHS) specialists. After a lengthy period of stagnation, vacancies in R&D have been rising at an accelerating pace for the past three months, while job listings for OHS personnel remain at a historically elevated level. „Conversely, the recovery noted earlier this year in the construction sector has somewhat diminished, though not entirely ceased,” the authors remarked.
The count of job postings for programmers has also risen for the ninth consecutive month, with a greater number of vacancies than a year prior. The authors cautioned that they approach this recovery with caution, as specific data suggests that the increase is driven by a small number of large companies resuming hiring. Their share of total job listings has nearly doubled within a year.
Job offers in services
In the services sector, the greatest number of new job listings in July were for positions in the education field – marking the third and largest single increase in several years. Vacancies also rose in the media sector, although a structural downward trend was apparent. Job openings in tourism decreased, and the number of job postings in this category remained at a comparable, yet relatively high, level compared to previous years. A decline in job postings was also visible in logistics, which has been one of the few sectors where the number of job listings has been consistently falling for nearly three years.
The Job Offer Barometer is based on job listings published online. Data is gathered monthly and then adjusted for seasonal variations, ensuring comparability across different seasons and excluding the impact of temporary job offers.
