Tusk on digital tax on big tech TVN24

„We might implement these taxes on large technology firms, or we might not,” stated Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He emphasized that the government is not actively pursuing this option at present, but that Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski is preparing a „potential project.”

As the Prime Minister remarked during a conference prior to his departure to Ankara, the idea of taxing large tech companies „has generated significant emotions.”

Tusk on the new tax

– In today’s world, we are witnessing emerging trends in customs and tax policies, and in accordance with this new direction, I can affirm: we may impose these taxes, or we may not – Tusk stated.

He further mentioned, „Currently, there is no initiative on this project within the government,” but Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski is working on a „possible proposal.” Tusk added that he and Gawkowski are contemplating „serious investments across nearly every sector,” ranging from energy to military matters, which necessitates „effective collaboration.”

– Following the current trend, I can say we will see – remarked the head of government.

Statement of the Ministry of Digital Affairs

„The Ministry of Digital Affairs is conducting analyses to develop a model for financing investments in digital infrastructure and enhancing skills in cybersecurity,” the ministry stated following Tusk’s comments.

He added that „one of the components of the proposal under consideration is the introduction of a digital tax, which is already in place in some EU countries,” and „once these analyses are concluded, the ministry will provide information regarding the outcomes.”

Taxation of big tech in Poland

On Monday, Gawkowski announced that the Ministry of Digitization will unveil a model for a digital tax on the revenues or profits of major tech firms in Poland within the next few months.

On the same day, Tom Rose, Donald Trump’s nominee for the US ambassador to Poland, expressed on the X platform that implementing a digital tax could adversely affect Poland and its relations with the US, with President Trump likely to respond. Following this statement, Gawkowski asserted that he would not back down from the plans.

On Tuesday, Finance Minister Andrzej Domański reminded PAP that tax policies are determined by the Ministry of Finance, which is not currently engaged in developing a digital tax.

Then, on Wednesday, the Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, announced on Programme 1 of the Polish Parliament that „when we are ready, prepare the (digital – ed.) tax and there will be an appropriate time for it, then there will certainly be support for Poland 2050.”
