A new industrial venture focused on the production of lithium-ion battery components is taking shape in Konin. „We expect several hundred individuals to secure employment at the Chinese JS Energy Europe facility,” stated Paweł Adamów, the city’s deputy mayor, in an interview with Radio Poznań.

The factory, previously operated by the British firm Johnson Matthey, has now been acquired by a Chinese investor. The new proprietor, JS Energy Europe, aims to commence production in 2026.

Several hundred positions

As reported to Radio Poznań by local officials, roughly 300 positions will be filled in the initial phase, with the potential for the total to rise to 800. Presently, the facility employs around 50 individuals.

The Chinese corporation acquired the under-construction factory from Johnson Matthey. „This entire year will focus on renovating the plant to fit the technology that the Chinese investor intends to implement. The product is fairly similar, as it’s a material for electric vehicle batteries. However, the technology will differ somewhat,” explains Paweł Adamów.

„The investor plans to establish a photovoltaic farm adjacent to the factory. Additionally, a city bus service will be available to the plant,” reports Radio Poznań.

Acquisition of the factory

At the close of last year, the Chinese company Ningbo Ronbay New Energy Technology announced in its semi-annual report for 2024 that it had completed the acquisition of the Johnson Matthey Battery Materials Poland factory located in Konin.

The new owner noted that the facility came equipped with comprehensive infrastructure – manufacturing buildings, laboratories, support facilities, and established environmental protocols – which would considerably expedite future operations.

The British firm began its investments in Konin in 2019 but halted them in 2021.
