Gas price down by almost 15 percent. Decision of the President of URE

Starting July 1, the gas price in the PGNiG Obrót Detaliczny tariff will be reduced by 14.8 percent, changing from PLN 239.65 per megawatt-hour to PLN 204.26 per megawatt-hour, as announced by the president of the Energy Regulatory Office on Thursday. URE anticipates that bills will decrease by 8-11 percent based on gas usage.
According to the regulations, residential customers and public utility entities specified in the Act, including hospitals, schools, nurseries, kindergartens, and shelters, are entitled to benefit from the tariff price.
What will be the reduction in gas bills?
Reportedly, subscription fees will remain unchanged. Average market prices for high-methane natural gas will decline by 14.25 percent, while nitrogen-rich natural gas Lw will decrease by 14.22 percent, and nitrogen-rich gas Ls will see a reduction of 14.29 percent.
URE noted in its statement that household customers served by PGNiG OD, in addition to gas prices and subscription fees, are also responsible for distribution fees.
This indicates that the impact of the newly approved tariff will only affect the segment of the bill related to gas consumption, which means the overall bill change will be less than 14.8%, as subscription fees and distribution service charges will remain the same.
Price reduction of gas in Poland
The new PGNiG OD tariff for gas sales will be in effect from July 1, 2025, until June 30, 2026.
Subscription fees will not change.
As PGNiG OD customers, aside from gas prices and related subscription fees, also incur charges for gas distribution. This means that the reductions in their bills will be less pronounced than the reduction in gas prices. URE estimates suggest that bills will decrease by 8-11 percent depending on gas usage. The greatest reductions will be seen by households that consume the most gas, particularly for heating purposes.
According to Orlen’s calculations, a household using gas for cooking will see annual gas costs decrease by PLN 42 gross; if gas is also used for heating water, the reduction will be approximately PLN 350 gross, and if it is also used for home heating – around PLN 890 gross.
„This substantial reduction in gas prices is yet another piece of good news from Orlen this year. Our profits have increased, Orlen’s overall value has risen, and we have the most ambitious investment program in the history of Polish energy ahead of us. We are focused on building energy security, which entails ensuring stable supplies and the lowest possible energy costs for Polish citizens,” stated Orlen CEO Ireneusz Fąfara, as quoted in the company’s press release.
Meanwhile, PGNiG OD President Barbara Kurdelska indicated that the new pricing offer marks the beginning of favorable changes. „In accordance with our strategy, we will soon be better equipped to meet our customers’ needs, integrating a broad spectrum of products and services within a new business model,” she emphasized.
Lower gas prices and inflation impact
„This is a very positive surprise from URE. This will lead to a reduction in the average gas bill by about 10 percent. What will be its effect on the CPI path? Clearly disinflationary, as the tariff reduction is stronger than anticipated,” was reported on the Analyses Pekao profile on the X portal.
Analysts estimate that inflation „will decrease by 0.2 percentage points as a result.” „Additional implications: the inflation target (2.5% y/y) is becoming increasingly likely to be achieved in the third quarter… of THIS year,” it was added.
„Inflation on target in July! Not within the range (2.5% +/-1%), but close to 2.5%. The NBP may proceed with further rate cuts. Our current projection anticipates a reduction of 75 basis points by year-end (to 4.5%) and to 3.75% in 2026 as the minimum scenario,” analysts from ING Economics Poland shared on social media.
What are the components of a gas bill?
The total gas bill for household customers comprises: charges for gas fuel, subscription fees, and fees for the gas fuel distribution service based on the rate structure from the distribution system operator’s tariff (e.g. PSG).
The President of the Energy Regulatory Office approves tariffs for both sales (only for customers using gas for household needs and those performing essential public utility functions) and for distribution services (for all customer groups).
