High-tech export record broken. „Highest level in history”

In 2024, exports of high-tech products surged for the thirteenth consecutive year, achieving an unprecedented total of EUR 37.25 billion, as reported by the Polish Development Fund. The significance of armaments in this achievement is increasingly notable.
„Preliminary figures from the Central Statistical Office indicate that high-tech exports reached EUR 37.25 billion last year, marking a 10.1 percent increase compared to the previous year,” the Polish Development Fund stated in a report released to PAP.
PFR analysts highlighted that this marks the thirteenth year in a row of growth in Polish high-tech goods exports.
„The proportion of high-tech products in Poland’s overall merchandise exports rose to 10.6%, up from 9.6% in 2023, representing the highest level recorded in the history of available data (since 2007),” the Fund’s report noted.
The significance of Polish armaments is increasing
PFR pointed out that Polish armaments are becoming increasingly vital to the export of high-tech goods. „Following the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, both arms exports and their proportion within total high-tech exports saw a substantial rise. In 2021, the share was modest at 0.5%, which has now escalated to 7.1%,” PFR reported.
The Fund’s report also provided insights into research and development spending in Poland, although these figures are from 2023. Investment in this area reached EUR 11.7 billion, which, according to PFR, represents a 22.6% increase from 2022 and a staggering 926% rise compared to the research and development expenditures in 2004, the year Poland joined the EU.
„However, presenting only nominal values is inadequate—they reflect the size of the economy. A more effective comparative method is to relate R&D spending to a country’s GDP. In nominal terms, we have also witnessed significant growth in this area. In 2004, we allocated about 0.55% of GDP to R&D expenditures, while in 2023, this figure rose to 1.56%. Despite this progress, we still lag considerably behind the EU average overall. It is noteworthy, however, that the gap between Poland and the EU has been narrowing in recent years,” PFR remarked in the report.
High-tech products encompass innovative goods and services grounded in the latest advancements in science and technology, including electronics, software, and cutting-edge weapons.
