In 2024, nearly 42,000 fathers availed themselves of parental leave. This marks an increase of 11 times compared to 2022, as reported by the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS).

– In 2024, a total of 41,900 fathers took parental leave – which is more than double the number from 2023 and eleven times greater than in 2022 – stated Mariusz Jedynak, a member of the ZUS management board.

He continued: – This serves as a clear indication that the work-life balance directive is yielding positive results and motivating fathers to engage more actively in childcare.

Fathers on parental leave

– If we genuinely seek equality, we must address the root causes of inequality – emphasized Karolina Andrian, board member of the Share the Care Foundation.

She highlighted that women should not face disadvantages due to motherhood, and men ought to have genuine opportunities to partake in family life.

– This is not merely a question of social justice; it also represents a chance for more robust economic growth and an improved quality of life – Andrian remarked.

Promoting parental and professional equality

ZUS announced that, in collaboration with the Share the Care Foundation, they are once again uniting with representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as employers, to advocate for parental and professional equality.

Marking the second anniversary of the EU work-life balance directive’s implementation in Poland, the 4th edition of the campaign „Equal at home – equal at work. It pays off for everyone” is set to launch. This time, the focus is on the significance of education and the role of proactive employers, as these are crucial for the ongoing increase in fathers utilizing parental benefits.
