Presidential elections 2025. Magdalena Biejat: yes to cadastral tax

Housing is a fundamental right, not merely a commodity. It is meant for living, not as a profit-generating entity, stated Magdalena Biejat, the New Left presidential candidate, on Sunday. She also addressed matters concerning loan subsidies and cadastral tax.
Biejat participated in the Left’s housing convention in Włocławek on Sunday. In her address, she expressed that her priority is not the earnings of developers and banks, but rather ensuring that Polish citizens can afford housing. „I stand with the people. I am the sole candidate who prioritizes apartments,” she declared.
In her view, her competitors lack credibility regarding housing issues, as neither PiS at the national level nor Rafał Trzaskowski in Warsaw have effectively addressed this challenge.
Biejat believes that high-standard social housing estates are achievable. „We don’t need to seek examples in Vienna or Berlin. They exist in Włocławek,” she remarked.
Biejat opposes loan subsidies
Biejat highlighted that the Left’s negotiating leverage in the government hinges on the election outcome. „I want to pose a question to my opponents: will you reject the law on credit subsidies? I certainly will,” she asserted.
She contended that equitable bank margins contribute to the peace of mind for Poles. She indicated that if elected, she would pursue a legislative initiative regarding „fair mortgages”; the maximum interest on such loans would be set at 4 percent, with a bank margin of 1 percent.
„Rest assured, banks will not go bankrupt. They will simply earn less,” she emphasized. „Housing is a right, not an investment,” the presidential candidate added.
Cadastral tax
Her program includes a cadastral tax on the third and any additional properties. The revenue generated will be allocated to the social housing fund.
„I support the cadastral tax. The housing crisis can be addressed,” Biejat stated.
The cadastral tax is one approach to taxing real estate, with the tax amount determined by the property’s value.
The presidential election is scheduled for May 18, with a potential second round on June 1.
