Certain regions in the provinces of Kuyavia-Pomerania, Łódź, Masovia, Warmia-Masuria, and Greater Poland will be subjected to „extraordinary measures” due to the threat of the bird flu virus spreading. The European Commission is set to make a decision on this next week, as stated by EC spokesperson Eva Hrnczirzova.

According to the spokesperson, in the past two months, there have been 53 confirmed cases of bird flu in Poland, particularly in the Mazowieckie and Wielkopolskie provinces, with a total of 73 cases nationwide. She emphasized that while the disease is also present in other EU nations, the circumstances in Poland are „especially adverse.”

She further noted that the significant number of poultry farms contributes to the spread of the illness.

Areas at High Risk

– Hence, certain regions in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Łódź, Masovian, Warmian-Masurian, and Greater Poland voivodeships, characterized by a high concentration of poultry processing facilities, can be marked as high-risk zones for the transmission of HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza virus – ed.), Hrnczirzova explained.

She added that the spring migration of wild birds is currently underway, and there has been a rise in the number of outbreaks among wild species in some areas of the EU, including Poland, which heightens the risk of the virus spreading to poultry.

The EC asserts that it is essential to implement additional emergency measures in Poland that should apply to these high-risk regions. – The Commission will adopt these measures next week – Hrnczirzova reported.

Bird flu is a viral infection that primarily threatens birds—both wild and domesticated fowl. The term encompasses various subtypes of viruses that vary in their virulence and contagiousness.
