There is a decision by the president regarding electricity prices and wind turbines
President Karol Nawrocki announced on Thursday that he has vetoed an amendment to the so-called wind farm law, which aims to relax the regulations for investments in onshore wind energy and maintain electricity prices at their current levels until the final three months of 2025.
„The law concerning wind farms, which we ought to refer to it as, represents a type of coercion by the parliamentary majority and the government. (…) This legislation pertains to wind farms, not to the reduction of electricity costs,” stated President Nawrocki during a press conference on Thursday.
He further revealed plans to introduce his own legislation to the Sejm aimed at freezing energy prices. „Today, I signed a bill that mirrors the wind farm law; we haven’t modified even a single word. I will be prepared to sign it starting September 24th,” the president mentioned.
The principal aim of the so-called Wind Farm Act is to deregulate the current laws governing investments in onshore wind farms. The amendment repeals the 10H rule established in 2016 and sets a new minimum distance of 500 meters for new wind turbines from residential structures, down from the existing 700 meters.
Freezing electricity prices
Besides the provisions relating to the construction of wind turbines, the act also includes a clause introduced during parliamentary discussions that prolongs the freeze on the net electricity price for households at PLN 500 per MWh until the fourth quarter of 2025. Currently, this freeze is effective through the end of September.
Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka had previously indicated on TVN24 that if the president were to veto the bill, „it is certainly an option” to propose a bill focused solely on freezing energy prices, excluding the wind farm component.
„However, we are also considering a tariff recalculation. (…) At this point, we are aware that the elevated tariff rates stemming from the errors of our predecessors will be significantly reduced. We will determine how much lower, as these are decisions made by the companies, and we will adjust the price freeze accordingly,” elaborated the Minister of Energy.
