Trains will no longer be required to honk at crossings

As of Tuesday, drivers are no longer required to sound the „Attention” signal before railway crossings that are equipped with barriers or light and sound signals. This change results from an amendment to the regulations signed by Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak. The adjustment aims to minimize noise in residential areas and enhance the quality of life for inhabitants.
The Ministry of Infrastructure has revealed an amendment to the rules governing rail traffic management, which is set to bring notable alterations for residents living near rail-road crossings. Drivers will be exempt from sounding the Rp1 „Attention” signal before crossings that have barriers or light and sound signals.
Modifications in regulations
As highlighted in the announcement, this modification aims to „substantially enhance the living comfort of all individuals residing close to crossings.” The requirement to use the signal will persist only for crossings and those that are unsecured.
The amendment addresses „numerous complaints and requests” from residents who have pointed out the disturbances caused by frequent sound signals. To illustrate the extent of the changes, an example was cited of the route from Warsaw through Poznań to the western border of the country – over a distance of 470 kilometers, the number of signals will drop from 139 to merely 9.
When do they take effect?
Beyond issues related to noise, the new regulations also aim to enhance the capacity of railway lines and optimize the operation of carriers, including during emergencies.
The new regulations took effect on 20 May 2025, with the exception of provisions concerning the new braking plates, which will become effective on 14 December 2025, coinciding with the implementation of the new annual timetable.
