How much do strawberries from Poland cost? The price of Polish strawberries
Domestic strawberries are currently available for purchase. Their prices remain elevated due to the cold weather in May and local frosts, as noted by Maciej Kmera, a specialist in the wholesale market in Bronisze. He mentioned that the weather is expected to improve soon, leading to an increase in supply, which could potentially lower prices.
– The initial domestic strawberries started appearing for sale at the beginning of May, with high prices attributed to their greenhouse origin, where cultivation costs are higher. Presently, strawberries are being sold from under plastic coverings and even from fields protected with non-woven fabric. Their current prices range from PLN 15 to 25 per kilogram, depending on the quality and cultivation method – Kmera explained.
In comparison, Polish strawberries were available earlier last year, with growth accelerated by approximately two weeks, resulting in lower prices. By mid-May, the price for a kilogram of strawberries was between PLN 12-15.
What are the current strawberry prices?
The expert pointed out that the relatively high cost of strawberries is also due to unfavorable weather conditions that hindered fruit ripening – it has been cold, and frosts have impacted many areas of the country. However, „things are improving,” and meteorologists are forecasting warmer weather and more sunshine.
– The fruit should ripen rapidly, and there may even be an influx of it – he explained.
Kmera noted that greenhouse strawberries have a higher sales margin, but their appearance and quality are superior. The remainder of the offerings is split roughly evenly between fruits from foil tunnels and field crops. The latter are more affordable, yet the strawberries are less plump and vibrant.
Regarding supply, it is also limited due to the weather. Consumers enjoy strawberries, but they are most likely to purchase them when the weather is warm. – Interest in strawberries is expected to rise shortly – Kmera added.
Strawberry prices in Poland
Strawberry prices remain quite stable, whether from foil tunnels or from fields previously covered with non-woven fabric. Greenhouse strawberries can reach prices as high as PLN 25 per kilogram, while tunnel strawberries are priced around PLN 20/kg. Strawberries from field crops, sold in two-kilogram containers, are valued at PLN 15-18/kg – reported Maciej Kmera.
The competition for domestic strawberries comes from imports, particularly from Greece. Until recently, these could be found in chain stores at promotional prices, but they have now vanished from stores in Warsaw.
Imports will return, Kmera assured. – Merchants have been cautious, worrying that Polish strawberries would „run out,” leaving them with only imported options, but it has turned out that domestic supply is lacking, and the prices for imported strawberries are competitive – he elaborated.
The cost of imported strawberries is significantly lower, with prices around 10 PLN/kg midweek; however, as Polish strawberries became more expensive, importers adjusted their prices to 15-17 PLN/kg.
Within about two weeks, the first domestic cherries are expected to arrive, featuring early varieties – informed Krzysztof Czarnecki, vice-president of the Association of Fruit Growers of the Republic of Poland. This year’s cherry yield is anticipated to be low, as some trees have suffered frost damage. – Prices will likely be higher than last year – Czarnecki stated. Currently, imported cherries in the wholesale market in Bronisze are priced between 25-65 PLN/kg.
