Tax refund. Fraudsters use PIT settlements

Cybercriminals are posing as representatives of the tax office, claiming there is a supposed refund for overpaid taxes – reports the CERT Polska team, which operates at the NASK institute. Experts stress that their objective is to acquire personal and payment card information.
In the emails dispatched, the scammers notify recipients about an alleged requirement to verify their details to facilitate the tax overpayment refund.

„The message includes a link directing to a site where you are required to 'confirm’ your data. Take note – the website closely resembles an official government site,” as stated in the NASK announcement.
As emphasized by NASK experts, entering personal and payment card information on a fraudulent site could lead to its theft by cybercriminals.

How can you safeguard yourself against fraudsters?
NASK has also provided several guidelines on how to defend yourself from fraudsters.
„Remain composed. Cybercriminals exploit our emotions – an alleged refund serves as a significant bait. Think carefully. Receiving a refund does not necessitate sharing payment card information,” NASK advises.
„Avoid trusting links and attachments. Before clicking, verify whether the website address corresponds to legitimate information – watch for misspellings or unusual extensions. Assess authenticity. If uncertain, refrain from clicking the link. Access the government site and log in as you typically would,” we read.
„Report any suspicious messages to the experts at the CERT Polska team for verification by either reporting the incident through this website or sending it to the following email: [email protected],” NASK emphasizes.
