The debt of the industrial sector has now hit PLN 1.27 billion, reflecting a rise of PLN 164 million over the past year, according to the most recent figures from the National Debt Register. The decline in performance was partly attributed to Donald Trump’s economic conflict, which „triggered significant uncertainty within the European Union”.

As reported by the KRD, the debts of the industrial sector stood at PLN 1.11 billion a year ago, and they currently total PLN 1.27 billion. The number of debtors has also risen from 22.5 thousand to 23.8 thousand. Meanwhile, the average debt has increased by PLN 4.4 thousand, with current arrears per company amounting to PLN 53.6 thousand.

The authors of the report highlighted that the Polish industrial sector was disrupted by Donald Trump’s actions, „who initiated an economic conflict against nearly the entire globe”. „This led to considerable uncertainty within the European Union, particularly in Germany. Domestic exports to Germany in 2024 have dropped by 3.9% to EUR 94.8 billion, and economists believe this is merely the onset of more declines” – it states.

„Market turbulence” impacts industry

According to KRD statistics, the „market turbulence” is most acutely experienced by companies manufacturing metal components, whose primary clientele is the construction sector. They are burdened with debts totaling PLN 224 million, representing nearly one-fifth of all industry arrears. Following them are food producers, who owe PLN 159.6 million to their suppliers.

Moreover, companies engaged in the repair, maintenance, and installation of machinery and equipment must settle debts amounting to PLN 115.9 million. Companies that manufacture wood products have outstanding debts of PLN 95.6 million.

The industry has its debtors

Financial institutions are primarily expecting payments from industrial firms – banks, leasing firms, insurance companies, and receivables management entities, which are owed PLN 777.7 million in total. Energy providers are also awaiting payments (PLN 112.5 million), along with commercial businesses, to which industrial firms owe PLN 109 million.

The industrial sector itself has its own debtors – clients owe a cumulative total of PLN 320 million; this constitutes one-fourth of what the sector needs to repay. The largest segment of this debt consists of mutual obligations, with arrears to other industrial companies amounting to PLN 102.2 million. Following this are construction firms with a total of PLN 88.2 million and trade businesses with debts of PLN 57.5 million. Manufacturing companies are also expecting to collect PLN 18.6 million from entities within the agricultural sector.
