The deposit system in Poland will come into force in October 2025

The Ministry of Climate and Environment has announced that beverages packaged with a deposit symbol will start appearing in Poland from October 2025. This indicates the introduction of a deposit-refund program. It is important to highlight that these packages will not necessarily need to be returned to the original point of purchase. This is due to the extensive network of return locations.
The Ministry of Climate and Environment (MKiŚ) has released a statement regarding the deposit system, which will be rolled out nationwide starting October 2025.
The Ministry emphasized that buying a beverage in a container with a deposit symbol does not require returning it to the same place. Consumers can return containers at any collection point that participates in the system.
„The requirement to accept packaging with a deposit symbol is applicable only to retail stores with an area exceeding 200 square meters that sell items in packaging included in the deposit system,” the announcement highlighted.
Smaller retailers may choose to accept packaging voluntarily, except for those selling products in reusable glass bottles, such as beer. This regulation does not extend to medications or dietary supplements.
How will the deposit system function?
The deposit-refund program will cover all retail establishments selling products in packaging marked with a deposit-refund symbol—including pharmacies, sports stores, and gas stations that carry them. Only stores larger than 200 square meters will be mandated to accept the packaging back. This means that while most pharmacies may sell mineral water in deposit containers, they will not be obligated to take back the packaging.
The coverage of a product by the deposit-refund system will be indicated by the system logo on its label, which will also specify the deposit amount:
– plastic bottles up to 3 liters – deposit: PLN 0.50,
– metal cans up to 1 liter – deposit: PLN 0.50,
– reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 liters – deposit: PLN 1.00.
Where and how can I return items?
Smaller shops may opt to accept packaging but are not required to do so. However, exceptions apply for stores under 200 square meters that sell beverages in reusable glass bottles, primarily beer, which will generally accept the packaging.
It is also important to note that deposit vending machines, which do not have to be situated inside stores, will serve as locations for returning packaging marked with the deposit symbol. Furthermore, in partnership with system operators, temporary collection points may be organized during significant cultural or sporting events.
