Industry responds to crisis. „This is proof”

Producers are addressing the challenges in the egg market brought on by the bird flu outbreak. As stated by Paweł Podstawka, president of the National Federation of Poultry Breeders and Egg Producers, this marks the first increase in the number of laying hens hatched in two years.
– We are witnessing the initial signs of a rise in the number of laying hens on Polish farms, which presents an opportunity to boost egg supply and curb further price hikes. Naturally, given that approximately six million hens have been culled in Poland due to bird flu in recent months, including nearly three million laying hens, it may take several months to achieve complete equilibrium – Podstawka remarked.
The industry reacts to the crisis
– Nevertheless, the noticeable increase is an indication of the industry’s response, which has recognized the potential for growth in production profitability and has chosen to replenish their herds, despite ongoing HPAI outbreaks, in order to fulfill market demand – the president of KFHDiPJ added.
According to information from KFHDiPJ, based on data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS), the count of hens producing table eggs in Poland has risen for the first time in two years.
In January 2025, the number of laying hens hatched on Polish poultry farms saw an increase of 8.6% compared to the same timeframe last year, totaling 3.2 million. For reference, there were 2.9 million hatches in the same period in 2024, 3.3 million in 2023, and 3.8 million in 2022.
The National Federation of Poultry Breeders and Egg Producers represents farm owners responsible for over 60 percent of the egg production in Poland.

Imported eggs
On Thursday, the National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers (KIPDiP) reported a shortage of eggs outside of cage-produced options, and indicated that retailers are beginning to import eggs from abroad. They noted that some consumers in Poland „feel misled.”
Katarzyna Gawrońska, director of the National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers, clarified that the scarcity of local eggs in certain stores is not attributable to Polish producers, but rather to the trade policies of specific retail chains. – Unfortunately, some retailers have made precarious choices to cease the sale of cage eggs, resulting in Polish egg packers needing to import barn eggs from outside the country – Gawrońska explained.
